Students
interested in graduate study in biological
fluid dynamics at Caltech can apply to
any number of different academic programs,
or Options, within the academic divisions.
Students admitted into one Option (e.g.,
aeronautics, biology, or mechanical engineering)
can avail themselves of resources across
campus and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory
(JPL). Doctoral students often end up performing
their thesis work in collaboration with
faculty members not formally associated
with their academic program or division.
A number of Caltech graduate and undergraduate
students work on projects associated with
research at JPL.
In choosing where to apply,
students should consider both which Option
suits their professional needs and for
which ones they have a suitable undergraduate
preparation. In considering potential
thesis studies, however, students should
explore broadly the research programs available
both across campus and at JPL. As a start,
explore the research
interests of
the Caltech faculty affiliated
with biological fluid dynamics.

The
degree of Doctor of Philosophy is conferred
primarily in recognition of breadth of
scholarship, depth of research, and of
power to investigate problems independently
and efficiently, rather than for the completion of
definite courses of study. However, many Options do
have specific course requirements as listed in the catalog description
for each Option. The rest of the work consists of research
and preparation of a thesis.

Admissions website
